Why MDF needs care
The edge is where MDF spraying goes wrong
MDF has a smooth face but a soft, thirsty cut edge. Spray colour straight onto it and the edge soaks it up, swells and turns rough or patchy.
We seal and sand the edges first, then prime, then spray the top coat, so the edges end up as tight and smooth as the face.
We spray raw MDF, moisture-resistant MDF and routed or shaped parts, from single panels to full joinery jobs for the trade.

Check the parts
Clean, dry and free of dust and filler bloom before anything starts.

Seal the edges
Cut and routed edges sealed and sanded until they are tight.

Primer
A primer coat over everything — top coat never goes on bare MDF.

Sand between coats
Every coat sanded smooth so the last one lies flat.

Top coat
Two-pack colour sprayed in the booth, faces and edges.

Cure
Left to cure hard before stacking, wrapping and collection.

Dead matt
Soft and chalky to look at, popular on deep colours and period homes.
Eggshell
A low sheen that wipes clean and hides everyday fingermarks.
Satin
A gentle reflection that lifts a darker room without showing every mark.
Gloss
Flatted and polished to a deep shine. Best on flat, smooth surfaces.
We can match a colour from any paint brand's chart, a sample door, a fabric or a tin you already have. Before the full job is sprayed, you can sign off a sample so there are no surprises.
Common questions
MDF spraying questions
- Can you spray raw MDF that I bring in?
- Yes. It needs to be clean, dry and free of filler bloom. We check it and tell you if anything needs work first.
- Why do MDF edges need sealing?
- The cut edge soaks up paint far more than the face. Without sealing it swells and goes rough, and the colour looks patchy along the edge.
- Do you spray moisture-resistant MDF?
- Yes. MR MDF is a good choice for kitchens and bathrooms and sprays well with the right primer.
- Can you spray parts you didn't make?
- Yes. We spray MDF from joiners, fitters and homeowners. If you need parts cut as well, our CNC and panel saw team can make them.
- Do you need primed MDF?
- No. We prime it ourselves. Board you have primed already is checked first, so the top coat bonds properly.
