Staircase spraying

Staircase spraying — every spindle, no brush marks

Spindles, banisters, handrails, newel posts and strings spray painted in your home, with floors, walls and carpet fully protected.

Why spray a staircase

Spindles are slow to brush and hard to get right

A staircase has dozens of spindles, each with curves and corners that brushes struggle to reach evenly. Spraying covers every side in a smooth, even coat with no runs or brush marks.

A staircase is part of the house, so this work is done on site. The hallway, treads, carpet and walls are masked and sheeted before anything is sprayed.

Handrails get the most handling of anything in a house, so they are finished with a hard-wearing top coat. Oak or timber handrails and treads can be left natural or clear lacquered.

How it is done

How a staircase is sprayed

  1. 01

    Photos and colour

Send photos of the stairs; we agree colour, sheen and what stays natural.

  2. 02

    Protect

Floors, carpet, treads and walls masked and sheeted.

  3. 03

    Preparation

Old paint keyed or taken back, cracks and dents filled, sanded smooth.

  4. 04

    Primer

A primer to suit bare wood or the old paint.

  5. 05

    Top coat

Colour sprayed in thin coats on every face of every spindle.

  6. 06

    Unmask and check

Protection removed and the stairs left clean.

Finish and colour

Colour and sheen

Dead matt

Soft and chalky to look at, popular on deep colours and period homes.

Eggshell

A low sheen that wipes clean and hides everyday fingermarks.

Satin

A gentle reflection that lifts a darker room without showing every mark.

Gloss

Flatted and polished to a deep shine. Best on flat, smooth surfaces.

We can match a colour from any paint brand's chart, a sample door, a fabric or a tin you already have. Before the full job is sprayed, you can sign off a sample so there are no surprises. Timber handrails and treads can be left natural or clear lacquered.

Common questions

Staircase spraying questions

Can I still use the stairs?
We plan the work with you so there is a way up and down. The stairs need to be left alone while the coats dry.
Will you spray my carpet or walls?
No. Everything that is not being sprayed is masked and sheeted first.
Can the handrail stay as natural wood?
Yes. A common choice is painted spindles with a natural or clear lacquered oak handrail.
Do you spray new spindles before fitting?
Yes. New spindles and rails can be sprayed in our booths and fitted finished.
