Valchromat
Valchromat — colour right through the board
Valchromat coloured MDF supplied, cut to size, CNC machined and clear lacquered in our Croydon workshop.
What Valchromat is
A board that does not need painting
Valchromat is a wood-fibre board coloured all the way through, rather than painted on the surface. Cut it, rout it or chamfer it and the edge is the same colour as the face.
That makes it popular for furniture, shop fittings, wall panels and joinery where the edges are on show. It is denser and stronger than ordinary MDF.
The board still needs a clear finish to protect it and bring out the colour. We clear lacquer it in our booths in the sheen you choose, the same way we finish any joinery.

Common questions
Valchromat questions
- Does Valchromat need painting?
- No. It is coloured right through. It does need a clear finish to protect it from marks and moisture.
- Can you machine Valchromat on a CNC?
- Yes. It machines cleanly, and the cut edges stay the same colour as the face.
- Can I bring my own Valchromat boards?
- Yes. We can cut, machine and lacquer boards you have bought.
- Does lacquer change the colour?
- A clear lacquer usually makes the colour a little deeper. We can do a sample first.
